Rule n° 14 - The content does not misuse characters to simulate visual formatting.

Some content production tools, particularly those used for publishing on social media, do not allow content to be formatted with options such as bold or italics. To get around this limitation, it is possible to use Unicode mathematical and other characters, which simulate formatting. The visual rendering of this type of content is certainly more varied, but it makes the content incomprehensible in screen readers and, more generally, for tools used to index or manipulate content.

Goal

  • Enable content to be rendered correctly in screen readers.
  • Promote content indexing by search engines.
  • Promote content recognition by artificial intelligence components.

Implementation

Use the native functions of content editors to obtain bold, italics, etc. When these tools do not exist, do not misuse characters to simulate visual formatting.

Control

Verify that the content does not contain misused Unicode characters (particularly non-alphabetic characters) that simulate visual formatting.
